What's on the needles? May 2022

I have been so remiss in posting, but as I said in my last one, work became overwhelming so I retreated from everything. In fact, I was so stressed I couldn't settle on a knitting project and I started several that I didn't finish. Happily about 2 weeks ago I emerged from the doldrums and finished up a couple projects and even made a blanket! This will be more of a catch up post of things I've done over the past couple months.

I finally finished that 40's waffle sweater! I love it on my friend

I made a blanket using super bulky chenille yarn from Dollar City (Guatemala's answer to Dollarama)

While binge watching seasons 11-13 of Doctor Who (Jodie Whittaker is my favorite Doctor), I had the idea to make a scarf using the 4th Doctor's pattern in 13's colors. Super happy with the result

I started a sampler blanket using a random picker wheel for color and stitch

The cotton mitered square blanket is still underway, though I've modified the design to have squares of various sizes

Lastly, I'm working on my version of the Princess Diana Black Sheep sweater. I'm making it for a friend and I wanted it done before the summer. The original pattern calls for fingering weight yarn and 3mm needles, but I want to finish before summer break, so I drafted my own pattern using medium weight yarn and 5.5mm needles. It's not an exact replica, but I know my friend will appreciate it! I'm hoping to make a matching one for her dog, too

And there you have it! What is on the needles and what was. I have a list of ideas for projects, but I want to be smart and only start things I know I will be motivated to finish or can easily transport to the US

The Sweaters of Murder, She Wrote Episode: 11.20

I've decided to do a series of posts on the sweaters of Murder, She Wrote. I've watched every episode at least once over the years, and there are some fantastic sweaters in this show! Some you can find a similar pattern for, so if I can I will share it. Please note I am not very good at capturing all the sweaters just yet, so the picture quality is not going to be great. I had the idea for this while watching season 11, episode 20 "Another killing in Cork". So we will start there. Each post will give a spoiler-free synopsis of the episode, followed by a short review, and then sweaters! In this episode, we see Jessica traveling to Cork to visit some old friends. She stays in their big castle-like Bed and Breakfast with a host of "queer" characters (I use the words that are used in the show itself). Turns out there's a land dispute the landlord is involved in. People end up dead, of course, since this is a murder show, after all. In true Jessica Fletcher ...

First vacation in Guatemala

I live in Guatemala. I've been here for about 6 months now, well, I'm in the 6th month. I've gone to the market, visited Antigua for a weekend (twice), and explored a few things in the city. None of this was vacation. From the outside, it feels like it should be a vacation, but it's my life. I'm a teacher, so I go to work, get home, eat a lot of food, and crash. Every day. Knitting is involved in this of course. On weekends I grocery shop or stop in Dollar City for decorations or pots and pans. That's life. It's what I did as a teacher back in the United States. Why should that change just because I'm in another country? I know people will argue the point that because I'm in another country I have an obligation to do things and travel. These people are not preschool teachers. Planning a trip takes time and money, something I don't have enough of often. Just because it's easier to go to Antigua if you live in Guate, doesn't mean you want ...

Made in Guatemala

I've been here a couple of months now, and of course in that time I have been knitting A LOT. I've made 3 hats and two sweaters! I'm almost halfway through a scarf AND have begun work on another sweater... and I've made a few blanket squares. Here's some pictures: Irish Moss hat Map of the world sweater (from an early 90's kit!) First project with Guatemalan yarn! Single rib beanie (finally broke down and watched BoJack Horseman, and obviously made the hat because of ACE VIBES) Lovely cable beret
